Where can I download historical hail data?

A free hail dataset sample is available with no signup: eight fully-enriched Texas severe convective storm events from May 2025, with 3.0-5.0 inch hail across five storm days, 222 ground-truth hail reports, and 263 MRMS MESH radar swath polygons. Full historical hail datasets are licensed through Historical Event Intelligence, filtered to your geography and hail-size threshold.

Is hail data separate from tornado and wind data?

No, and that is deliberate. A single convective storm can produce hail, damaging wind, a tornado, and flash flooding in the same hours across different footprints. Our records keep those hazards distinct but connected, so you can query hail swaths, wind gusts, and tornado paths from the same storm rather than reconciling three unrelated datasets.

What measurements are actually in the data?

Measured hail size up to 6.1 inches and wind gusts up to 131 mph where an observation exists — and null where one does not. We do not zero-fill a missing measurement, because a zero would read as a calm reading rather than an absence. Severe convective storm records also carry MRMS MESH radar hail swath polygons, ground storm reports, and warning geometry; tornado records add surveyed damage paths with EF ratings.

Is there a severe weather API?

Yes — two. The Event Intelligence API streams severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings and events in real time with footprints and exposure, and Historical Event Intelligence serves the archive by query: by hail size, wind gust, EF rating, geography, or date range.

How far back does severe convective storm data go?

Tornado records run from 2014 with 99.6% carrying enhancement. Storm and severe weather records have contiguous coverage from 2007-2008, with measured hail and wind observations concentrated in the 2020s as radar and reporting networks densified. Detection density improves across the archive, so rising counts partly reflect better observation rather than more storms.
