Which landfall are you asking about?
The question a peak-intensity dataset cannot answer.
Super Typhoon Haiyan is recorded as a Category 5 storm — 170 knots, 895 millibars at peak. But it came ashore three separate times, and the intensity at each crossing is what mattered to the people there:
A dataset carrying only peak intensity would describe all three as the same Category 5 event. Ours carries the crossing — time, position, wind, country and state — so “what hit this location” has an answer. Storm-level magnitude remains peak Saffir-Simpson category; use the per-crossing wind for a specific place.

Where can I download historical hurricane data?
A free tropical cyclone sample is available with no signup: all five 2020 Atlantic storms whose tracks crossed Florida — Fay, Isaias, Marco, Sally and Eta — with 323 lifecycle track points carrying position, wind, pressure and status at six-hour intervals. Full historical hurricane datasets are licensed through Historical Event Intelligence, filtered by basin, category, landfall country, or date range.
What does the hurricane dataset contain?
3,173 tropical cyclone records, of which 1,707 are enhanced against IBTrACS v04r01 (NOAA/NCEI). An enhanced storm carries its complete best track — Super Typhoon Haiyan has 75 track points across 222 hours — with position, sustained wind, central pressure, storm nature, and distance to land at each point, plus quadrant wind radii, derived landfall crossings, peak Saffir-Simpson category, and track length.
Does the data include wind radii?
Yes, and quadrant-resolved rather than as a single number. Track points carry radii at the 34-knot, 50-knot and 64-knot thresholds, each broken out by NE, SE, SW and NW quadrant — the asymmetry that determines which side of a storm does the damage. On Haiyan, 57 of 75 track points carry radii; coverage varies by storm and era.
Can I see the intensity at each landfall, not just peak intensity?
Yes, and this is the distinction most datasets lose. Each landfall crossing carries its own time, position, wind speed, and country and state code. Haiyan made three crossings: Leyte, Philippines at 165 knots, Capiz at 145 knots, and Quang Ninh, Vietnam at 60 knots. A dataset that reports only peak intensity would describe all three as a Category 5 event. Storm-level magnitude in our records is PEAK Saffir-Simpson category, so use the per-crossing wind when the question is about a specific place.
What are the limits of this data?
Three worth knowing. Enhancement covers IBTrACS-matched named storms, so unnamed and pre-1997 systems have less depth. 2025 JTWC-basin storms are provisional — 34-knot radii only, with positions and intensities subject to revision until final best tracks publish around December 2026. And landfall crossings are derived by point-in-polygon over the track, which is conservative: landfalls on islands smaller than the coastline dataset's resolution can be missed, and intensity reflects the nearest three-hourly track point.
